It’s no longer just for geeks or gamers. Many believe metaverse worlds have become mainstream and are expected to be the next generation of the internet. Some say it’s just a corporate buzzword that investors love over a nebulous invention.

Brands and businesses have been working to make immersive spaces where employees can play and work. Meta began testing remote working apps. Horizon Workrooms in AugustUsing Oculus Quest 2 headsets by the company to host meetings, people can create avatars using them, according to Reuters.

Thomas Johann Lorenz co-founder of Journee said that working from home in the midst coronavirus lockdowns for 18 months has accelerated demand to virtual worlds. He describes himself as a metaverse business.

“When it comes to retaining talent at your company or keeping up a company culture in the remote-first age, you need tools … that are stronger than just email and Zoom,” he told CNBC by phone. “The internet as we know it … has so far been about [a]High-efficiency exchange of data, information,” he explained, adding that while the metaverse is able to tap into “relationships and emotions”, he believes it will also be capable of tapping into human communication.

A metaverse was created by the firm. SiemensThe company held a conference via virtual means. The firm also offered a virtual meeting place for employees who had never met before to take selfies and watch fireworks. BMWAnd Adidas. Lorenz believes that the metaverse can be integrated on smartphones and other hardware. Virtual reality headsets will not be necessary for these experiences.

Niche candidates

Richard Chen was the Art Director of Space Bugs. The project saw over 3,000 tokens that were not fungible sell in less than six hours after it launched on OpenSea. NFTs are unique assetsBlockchain technology is used to store and verify artworks. They can often be purchased with cryptocurrencies.

CNBC interviewed him by email. He stated that “the NFT market has so many experts to hire from social or marketing agencies but the experts were the people sitting at home behind their screen.” Chen hired 25 community managers that he initially met in Discord chats, and had them do pilot projects to test their abilities.

Chen said that “they can’t easily be found in real life and the most talented talents aren’t always close to you location-wise so getting these people from the metaverse will be the best way forwards for our niche projects.” Chen stated that Discord members taught him a lot about the blockchain, metaverse and hiring.

Some people are skeptical about the possibility of the metaverse. Kubi Springer is the founder of SheBuildsBrands. She said that there’s a generation gap. Her nine-year-old son is playing games on a virtual platform, while her daughter plays them. Roblox (whose founder told CNBCAlthough the company’s 16-year-old business plan was based upon the metaverse, Springer seems less optimistic. CNBC spoke to her via telephone: “We don’t have enough hold on the technology.”

“Technology’s amazing. The technology has improved our lives in numerous ways [but]There is a way to do it, I believe. [are]Also, many of the things we are seeing, like the dark internet that shows that technology, augmented reality, and AI, require us to have a very strong hold over it or it’ll have a stronghold on us.” she stated.

Springer anticipates that companies will be able to employ metaverse platforms for their hiring needs, however, he is worried about the security of data and how they can affect virtual worlds. “You don’t hire people just off of skills and talents … you hire them off that feeling you get when you connect with a human being to work out whether or not they’re somebody that might be a great fit for the team … And how do you gauge that in the metaverse?”

Stressful hiring

Companies need people who can understand the technology and how to use it. R/GA, a digital agency, is looking for someone to head its “head of immersive” division. This is responsible for creating virtual ecommerce shops in areas like Decentraland. a self-proclaimed metaverse for buying and selling land.

However, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find someone who has the right mix of skills according to Nick Pringle. “We are trying to find something a little more unicorn-like: someone with big brand experience, who can operate with large customers and has the ability to communicate effectively. [also] has an innate understanding of the platforms … there’s probably people you could count on one hand right now [who have that]He told CNBC over video that he agreed. R/GA has not yet used metaverse platforms to hire, but it plans to do so in the future.

Pringle also stated, “There is tension between large, centralized metaverse universes created by Meta and the likes.” MicrosoftGaming company EpicPeople own their data in decentralized locations. He said that if we are to reach a metaverse in which you can jump between places, or what they call “interoperability”, then there must be one protocol and one way to code, just like HTML does for email.

Martin Migoya CEO, consultancy GlobantIt is not yet clear what the plumbing behind the metaverse looks like. He told CNBC that he believes virtual worlds are a positive way to hire: “When interviewing.” [people]A screen doesn’t tell you much about them. When you’re able express new ideas, like what you can with your avatar in metaverse, you will find a lot more ways to get to know people better.
