WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have a new divide. On Tuesday, lawmakers fought publicly over claims of racism and religious bigotry against conservative party members.
Marjorie Taylor Greene (NYSE:) a fiery congresswoman, criticized Republican Lauren Boebert over remarks she made about a Democrat which were deemed Islamaphobic and thereby further complicated Republican efforts to unify their ranks ahead of next year’s elections.
“@NancyMace, the trash at the GOP Conference. Never been attacked by Democrats (or RINOs) as she isn’t conservative. At @laurenboebert you can support Mace or hang out with your true gal friends, the Jihad Squad. Greene tweeted early Tuesday morning, “Your out of your league.”
RINO is the acronym for “Republican in Name Only” and it’s a term used often to attack party members that are not considered conservative enough.
Greene accused Mace of attacking her in an interview on CNN, in which Boebert made remarks about Democratic Representative Ilhan Ommar. She said that these remarks were racist tropes and disgusting comments.
Mace swiftly reacted to Greene’s tweet on Tuesday, describing herself in a tweet as anti-abortion conservative. She also added: “What is not I am (or a religious bigot)? That might be something you could try in your ‘league’.
Greene, Mace and Boebert are all in their first two-year term. The exchange came a day after a failed effort https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-republican-boebert-doubles-down-feud-with-democrat-omar-2021-11-29 to end the feud between Boebert and Omar, a Muslim who was born in Somalia. Boebert, who is a vocal supporter for former President Donald Trump and a frequent critic of Greene, had called Omar a member of “jihad squad”, and claimed it was okay to ride in the Capitol elevator with her if she wasn’t wearing a backpack.
Greene and Mace had clashed in the past. Their new disagreement could make matters more difficult for Kevin McCarthy, House Republican Leader. He seeks political unity in order to regain the House majority in 2022 congressional midterm elections.
McCarthy is under pressure from Democrats to discipline Boebert, barely two weeks after the House censured https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-republican-who-tweeted-violent-ocasio-cortez-video-face-house-sanction-vote-2021-11-17 Republican Representative Paul Gosar over an anime video depicting him killing progressive Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and swinging a pair of swords at Democratic President Joe Biden.
House Majority Leader StenyHoyer (the chamber’s No. 2) said, “We’re thinking about what actions should be taken.” According to reporters, he was the 2nd Democrat. Hoyer recommended that Boebert be sanctioned by the Republican caucus to remove such “toxic” behavior.
McCarthy’s office could not be reached immediately for comment.
Since Trump supporters invaded the Capitol Jan. 6, to prevent the certification of Biden’s 2020 victory, House Republicans have been plagued by threats and division.
Republican Representative Liz Cheney was ousted from a party leadership https://www.reuters.com/world/us/liz-cheney-vote-us-house-republicans-reach-watershed-over-trump-2021-05-12 position after voting to impeach Trump and criticizing his false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
Greene requested that the party expel Cheney, Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger and other members of the panel investigating Jan. 6’s riot.
The support of a $1 trillion infrastructure bill was also criticised by 13 House Republicans. It was opposed both by Trump and House leaders. Some lawmakers received death threats later.
