STOCKHOLM – Sweden’s Ericsson (BS) raised Tuesday its global outlook for 5G subscriptions at 660 million per year, citing stronger North American and Chinese demand.
The 580 million subscribers that the telecom equipment manufacturer had forecast previously, it said, 4.4 billion 5G subscribers would be available by 2027. This accounts for nearly half of all current mobile subscriptions.
Ericsson stated in the biannual Mobility Report, that China’s strong demand was partly due to decreasing 5G device prices.
Ericsson predicts that 5G will be the predominant mobile access technology in subscriptions by 2027. However, 4G subscriptions are expected to reach a peak in Q4 2021 and then fall as more subscribers move to 5G.
Ericsson competes with Nokia in Finland (NYSE:) and China’s Huawei (NYSE;), adding that 75% will be able to access 5G coverage by 2027.
