WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Gayle Smith, the global COVID-19 coordinator for the Biden administration, has resigned after eight months. This was just in time as the coronavirus Omicron is circulating around the globe.

A new virus variant has been identified that is more likely to spread than others. This has led to new restrictions on travel, especially in the United States.

Smith is a former coordinator for USAID (United States Agency for International Development) during President Joe Biden’s Obama administration. He was given the responsibility of leading U.S. vaccination diplomacy efforts.

Smith, president and chief executive officer of The ONE Campaign (a non-profit global focused on poverty, public health, and the environment), stated that Smith was currently on a temporary assignment at the State Department. However, no timeline was provided.

Smith had returned to the ONE Campaign. Mary Beth Goodman would fill her position as acting coordinator, a COVID-19 staff member, Blinken announced in a statement.

“Eight months after asking Gayle to join the team, the United States has donated more than 260 million vaccine doses to more than 110 countries and economies worldwide – well on our way to fulfilling President Biden’s commitment of 1.2 billion doses,” Blinken said.
