WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. legislators’ attempts to maintain the U.S. government in operation were thwarted by a coalition of conservative Republicans who threatened to stop any plans that would allow COVID-19 mandates to continue.

Congress must pass legislation by Friday midnight to continue funding federal operations. Otherwise, it will face a partial shut down during a pandemic. This would embarrass President Joe Biden’s Democrats who control only one chamber of Congress.

On Wednesday, the hardline Republican House Freedom Caucus urged Senate colleagues to reject any “continuing resolution” that would allow Biden to require that large and federal workers receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

In an open letter, the group addressed Mitch McConnell, the top Senate Republican.

McConnell stated earlier this week that he is confident the funding measure for the government will pass. The House Republicans don’t have the votes necessary to stop legislation. To pass legislation, most bills require 60 votes in order to be approved by the 100-seat evenly divided Senate. Therefore, Democrats will need to have support from at minimum 10 Senate Republicans for passage.

Chuck Schumer, Democratic Senate Majority leader, told reporters that McConnell and McConnell had been in talks about funding the government. He dismissed McConnell’s threat to the Freedom Caucus.

Schumer declared, “We’ll experience total chaos.” Schumer said, “It is up to both leaders to prevent that from happening.” Another suggestion was to have a separate vote regarding vaccine mandates.

Both parties have been negotiating about how to keep the government funded. Democrats are seeking to increase funding until January, then to pass spending bills. Republicans, however, want to delay the process until spring. This would allow spending to remain at levels that were agreed upon when Republican Donald Trump was President.

Two mandates mandating millions of American workers be vaccinated for COVID-19 were blocked by the Biden Administration in Court on Tuesday. These mandates are a critical part of the administration’s strategy to control the spread of coronavirus.

Temporarily, a federal judge blocked the enforcement of a mandate that healthcare workers be vaccinated. One federal judge temporarily blocked enforcement of a government mandate for healthcare workers. Another clause required that all new contracts be signed by the Administration must require that employees in the contract get immunized. Democrats were furious at this demand from conservative Republicans. I believe we are in the middle a public health crisis. “Vaccine requirements at this point are acceptable public-health measures,” Hakeem Jeffries, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus said to reporters.
