NEW YORK (Reuters) – Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:) intends to set new profit targets over the next three year, which will be consistent with the longer-term goals that it established in 2020. These are due to its investment banking boom and trading boom, according to three sources within the bank.
At its last investor day in January 2020, Goldman set three- and five-year targets for return-on-equity (RoE) and return-on-tangible-equity (RoTE), two measures of profitability, that analysts at the time said were ambitious.
Goldman’s success has resulted from U.S. Federal Reserve stimulus measures that pumped liquidity into the capital markets. However, Wall Street’s boom has led to faster progress than expected, according to three sources. But, executives know that this favorable economic environment will soon recede due the tightening of monetary policy. It is contemplating issuing new profitability targets through 2025, which would align with its 2020 longer-term goals.
Specifically, the sources said the bank is planning to set new medium term return-on-equity (RoE) and return-on-tangible-equity (RoTE) targets of at least 15%. However, they cautioned that targets may change in the future.
When asked for comments on the target expected, Goldman’s spokesperson stated that they had disclosed at their Investor Day in January 2020 a medium-term ROE target target of 13% and a longer-term ROE goal of mid-teens. Further comment was not made by the spokesperson.
