(Reuters) – A Trump-era program that forced asylum seekers to sit in Mexico waiting for U.S. Immigration hearings will be resumed by the Biden administration, according to a Mexican official who spoke out on Thursday.

Officials in the United States said that they will be taking steps to resolve Mexico’s humanitarian problems with the program. They include offering vaccines to migrants, and exempting additional categories of vulnerable people.

The policy, known as the Migrant Protection Protocols, was ended by President Joe Biden (a Democrat) shortly after his January inauguration. A federal judge found that Biden’s resignation did not comply with proper procedures and ordered it to be reinstated in August. Before the U.S. could restart its policy, it said that Mexico had to agree.

The Biden administration continues to actively try to terminate the program. They issued a new rescission note in hopes that it would resolve legal issues.

This policy formed the foundation of Trump’s tough-line immigration policies. It sent thousands of immigrants who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border to Mexico, where they had to wait for months or even years to be heard at U.S. Immigration hearings that were held in small courtrooms near the border.
