VIENNA, Reuters – The seventh round of U.S.-Iran indirect talks regarding the renewal of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement will conclude Friday, according to European and Iranian officials. They also plan on holding a meeting with all remaining party’s representatives with the goal of resuming negotiations next week.
This meeting of Iran, France and Germany is being held in the format of the Joint Commission, which has rescheduled previous rounds of negotiations. A senior Iranian official stated that the meeting would take place at Vienna’s midday.
“The Europeans would like to visit their capitals again for consultations…We will stay in Vienna for any further discussions,” said another. According to Reuters, an Iranian official who was close to the negotiations, resumed their normal pace on Monday following a five month hiatus.
Both the United States (and Iran) sound pessimistic on the possibility of reinstating the agreement that was abandoned by Donald Trump as President in 2018.
Iran broke many restrictions in the agreement that were meant to limit the amount of time needed to produce enough fissile-enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb. Iran claims it pursues enrichment for civil purposes only.
Iran demanded the lifting of any sanctions that have been imposed by the United States and European Union since 2017, even those not related to Iran’s nuclear program, in an uncompromising manner.
“We are awaiting the responses of the other parties to these proposed drafts,” Ali Bagheri Kani (Iran’s top nuclear negotiator) told reporters before heading to a meeting the remaining party to the agreement, sans the United States. Iran is refusing to meet with them face-to-face.
Bagheri Kani, a Bagheri Kani spokesperson for Reuters said Monday that Iran should also be guaranteed that there will not be any new sanctions in the future by the United States and its Western Allies.
