REUTERS/Irakli GemenidzeWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. Defense secretary Lloyd Austin said Saturday that Chinese military operations near Taiwan appear like rehearsals. However, he didn’t indicate whether he believed Beijing would actually carry out such flights.
Recent cross-strait tensions have been increasing. Taiwan complained about China’s repeated air strikes near Taiwan for more than a decade.
Austin spoke at a California conference, saying that while he doesn’t wish to speculate on the future, it does look a lot like rehearsals.
According to military definitions, training flights for military operations are rehearsals of potential operations.
China is not afraid to use force against Taiwan, even though Taiwan claims it is an independent nation that will protect its democracy and freedoms.
