MUMBAI (Reuters), New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patil became the third player to win all 10 wickets in an international cricket match, he did it against India in the second Test at Wankhede Stadium.
He was 33 years old and joined Jim Laker, an England offspinner (1956 against Australia), and Anil Kumble (India leg-spinner (1999 against Pakistan) to pick up all of the wickets in an innings.
“Welcome @AjazPatel #Perfect10. Bravo! “It took an extraordinary effort to accomplish it on the first and second days of a match,” spin bowling great Kumble said via Twitter.
Mumbai-born Left-armer Ajaz was born in Mumbai and whose parents immigrated to New Zealand 1996. He added six more wickets on Friday, to complete the match with figures of 10-119.
Ajaz started his career in fast bowling and was able to extract sharp turns and bounce off the pitch. He also carried New Zealand’s bowling on his shoulders, limiting the hosts to just 325 runs.
The stocky spinner picked up Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddhiman Samha in the first over of Saturday’s game. He then returned to the pavilion to pick up the rest to complete India’s innings.
Rachin Ravindra pounced on a Mohammed Siraj skier to confirm the end of the match. Ajaz fell down one knee, clutching his fists before being hugged and embraced by his teammates.
The Indian team gave him a standing ovation in their dressing room, as well as the small crowd on the ground that overlooked the Arabian Sea.
Ajaz was the dominant player with the ball but Mayank Agarwal scored most of the runs on the slippery surface.
Agarwal was 150 when he took a shot from Ajaz, but was caught by Ajaz on his next delivery. Axar Patel, an all-rounder, provided valuable support by scoring 52 runs in his maiden half century test.
