Google ex-employees accuse company of mistreatment amid NLRB case

Three former employees of Google filed a lawsuit against their employer this week. The suit claimed that the ex-employer fired them because they protested a contract Google had signed with Trump’s Customs and Border Patrol in 2019.
Paul Duke, Sophie Waldman, and Rebecca Rivers claim that they signed a contract with Google that contained the catchphrase “Don’t be Evil” when they first started their careers. They claim Google breached their agreement. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation and other relief because they suffered “significant damage in reputation and the ability to get reemployed for a living.”
Google parent Alphabet has little reason to be concerned financially — the company has over $140 billion in cash and equivalents on its balance sheet and a market cap of about $1.9 trillion. In December last year, the U.S. National Labor Relations Board (USNLRB) filed an application for complaintGoogle was accused of illegally terminating and monitoring employees as a retaliation to their unionization efforts. The trial has been paused for the last couple of months while judges review subpoenas, and it’s unclear when it will resume.
Laurie Burgesss, who represented the ex-employees that sued Google this week said this latest suit was meant to partly serve as “a reminder of this is still alive, and kicking.”
Google did not respond to our request for comment.
Paul Bogas, a judge for the NLRB, issued an order to Google this week to unseal over 70 documents related Google’s communications with IRI Consultants. IRI Consultants describes itself as a labor-relations firm. According to the NLRB’s allegations, IRI was employed as part Google’s “Project Vivian” anti-union initiative.
Bogas responded with a 13-page reply, in which it stated that Bogas was “disingenuous” and tried to misrepresent documents’ classification.
Bogas noted that Bogas’ review revealed “significant contemporaneous efforts by the Respondent to give the non-legal, third-party, material a facial appearance similar to privileged communications.” These documents include, or are related to, the creation of campaign materials. IRI supplies antiunion messaging strategies and messages amplification strategies as well as training tailored for the workforce of Respondents and their news and social media platforms.
