REUTERS/Lai Seng sin/File PhotoKUALA LUMPUR, (Reuters) – Telekom Malaysia said Saturday that it would be running 5G trials together with a government agency in preparation for a planned rollout of 5G network services later this month.
According to the telecommunications company, it will participate in pilot tests in Kuala Lumpur and other cities.
This is the first operator in telecom to have signed up for 5G trials. But, the operator did not specify if they had made a long-term contract for the 5G network usage.
It stated that it would continue to support the government in its goal to provide 5G to the country.
Reuters reports that Malaysia’s top mobile carrier has raised questions over pricing and transparency.
Digital Nasional Berhad, the state-owned wholesaler of 5G networks, said last month there had not been an agreement with carriers and that its initial timeline was “too optimistic”.
According to the report, talks to settle commercial terms with telecom companies are still underway and long-term agreements will be in place by 2022.
In an effort to speed up infrastructure buildingup across the country, the government decided in February that DNB would be set up to create a centralised wholesale network for 5G.
According to the government, 5G pricing will be less expensive for mobile operators than 4G.
