JAKARTA, Reuters – Ten people were trapped in Indonesia after the eruption of the Semeru volcano. The country’s disaster mitigation agent (BNPB), said that they had been evacuated. This was as the death toll rose to at least two, with dozens more injured.

Semeru (the tallest mountain of Java Island) erupted towers full of hot clouds and ash on Saturday. These blanketed the East Java Province villages and sent panicked people running.

Authorities said that the eruption destroyed a bridge linking two districts in Lumajang to Malang, and decimated several buildings.

Raditya Jati, a BNPB official, told Reuters that 10 persons were freed from the mines close to the volcano. She did not elaborate.

Thoriqul Haq was a local official from Lumajang who stated earlier that the sand miners were trapped at their sites.

Emil Dardak (East Java Deputy Governor) told Metro TV there was one more person who had died, making the death count to two.

BNPB stated that at least 35 individuals were in hospital, and Lumajang’s deputy chief said that 41 had suffered from burns.

Semeru is Indonesia’s most active volcano, rising to more than 3600m (12,000ft). There were no deaths when it erupted on January.

Indonesia straddles the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, a highly seismically active zone, where different plates on the earth’s crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Separately, an earthquake of magnitude 6 struck north of Halmahera on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. Halmahera lies approximately 2,000km (1,200 mi) northeast Semeru.
