REUTERS/Elizabeth FrantzWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar stated on Sunday she was confident that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would take “decisive actions” against Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert in the coming days for comments about Omar which have been called Islamophobic.
Boebert described Omar (a Somalian Muslim born in Somalia) as part of a “jihad group” at an event last month in Colorado. Boebert said she could ride along with Omar in a Capitol elevator, provided that her backpack was removed.
Boebert, a first-term lawmaker, apologized for his comments. Boebert did not show any remorse during a telephone call they had. Later, Democrats called on the House to remove Boebert from her assignments in committees for anti-Muslim bigotry.
Omar stated that she had spoken with the speaker and was confident that the speaker would take action next week.
When I got to Congress I was concerned that my hijab would prevent me from being sworn in. It was something she promised to take care of. That promise was fulfilled. I have another promise from her that she would take care of it. “I believe her.”
Pelosi and Boebert did not immediately comment.
Kevin McCarthy, House Republican Leader, defended Boebert last Wednesday by stating that she had publicly apologized to Omar and privately.
Omar didn’t say what Pelosi would do.
The Democratic-controlled House censured Republican Representative Paul Gosar last month for an anime video that depicted him killing progressive congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and swinging a pair of swords at President Joe Biden. For her past statements supporting violence against Democrats, Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene was also removed from her position in the committee.
Boebert and Greene, all conservatives who are outspoken supporters of ex-President Donald Trump, are Boebert and Gosar.
