Bob Dole, a former Senator was well-known for his sense of humor. He could be funny or serious.

His book “Great Political Wit” (Laughing (Almost), All the way to the White House) is a collection of humorous anecdotes about politics. He stated, “Irreverence’s in my blood.”

Dole made a surprise appearance on David Letterman’s late-night comedy program, the day after his defeat to Bill Clinton in 1996. Jay Leno invited Dole to appear on Jay’s program, where he played the role of Murphy Brown. Also, there were commercials for Pepsi (Dunkin’ Donuts), Viagra, and other impotency-fighting drugs like Viagra.

Dole stated that he appeared to make the appearances in order to demonstrate that politics is not over.

Below are some instances of Dole’s humor.

* “Tomorrow is the first day of my life when I have nothing to do.” This is his concession speech from 1996.

* “There they are – See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Evil.” After seeing former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford together in the White House,

* “I, Robert J. Dole, do solemnly swear … We are sorry, but the speech was incorrect. Pretending to be president while he accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 1997 from Clinton.

* “OK but it would have been better had they served some donuts.” The White House responded to a reporter asking about the flow of a White House meeting.

* “I thought I was a conservative but we’ve got some in Congress now who are so far right they’re about to fall out of the Capitol.” During a 2014 sentimental tour through Kansas.

* “My main concern about those (2016) elections is that, well, I just hope I’m still around to vote then. If I’m not… If not, I will vote absentee.” I was on a tour of Kansas. (This story refiles to fix typo “respected” in leade
