WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Monday, the Pentagon announced that it had completed military construction. The Pentagon will start testing a long range radar for a homeland defense system. This radar can be used to track intercontinental and next-generation missiles.

According to the U.S. Defense Department’s 2015 plan, a new long range radar would be deployed in central Alaska. This will allow the U.S. missile defences to better detect potential missiles from Iran or North Korea. It also increases the capability of ground interceptors operating in Alaska and California.

The Pentagon Missile Defense Agency Director, Vice Admiral Jon Hill said that “The Long Range Discrimination Radar is now complete and it’s time to begin testing. This phase will allow us to fully operationally use this critical system.” LRDR will enable Northern Command to more effectively defend the United States against hypersonic and ballistic missile threats.

Clear Space Force Station is home to the huge arrays, which measure 60 feet tall by 60ft wide. Official fielding ceremonies were held by the Pentagon for the new system, which cost $1.5 billion.

In a statement, the agency stated that LRDR once operational will offer unparalleled capability to simultaneously search for and track small objects including ballistic missiles at very far ranges.

It was the prime contractor of the system. Lockheed Martin (NYSE:) Co.
