(Reuters] – Palantir Technologies (NYSE) announced Tuesday that it will invest $1B in U.S. chemicals and material suppliers to make semiconductors and that it would form a joint venture (NYSE:) with Palantir Technologies data analytics firm Palantir Technologies in order to address supply chain challenges in the chip sector.

Merck KGaA, Darmstadt (Germany) – that uses EMD Electronics as its North American electronic business name to avoid any confusion with unaffiliated pharmacy company of the exact same name – provides a variety of chemicals for chip factories. This is expected to increase if the U.S. Congress passes a $52billion aide package in order to boost domestic manufacturing.

Through 2025, the company will spend $1Billion on sites in Arizona and California as well as Texas, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

Kai Beckmann (chief executive) of the electronics division at the German company stated in a statement that “the chip shortage requires industry-wide collaboration to solve the supply chain problems consumers are currently facing.”

Merck KGaA said Tuesday that it would form a joint venture to collaborate with Palantir analytics firm. This joint venture will collect data from both material and chemical suppliers and from chip factories on the one hand, and then analyze that information to increase efficiency.

Laura Matz who will manage the joint venture called Athinia, stated that both the chip factory suppliers and their manufacturers have extensive trade secrets. They have been reluctant to give out data outside of their organizations in the past. Merck KGaA’s EMD Digital subsidiary will host Athinia, which is separate from the electronics business.

Matz stated that the inability to share data has made it difficult for them to solve the problem of supply-chain inefficiency. We couldn’t overcome it until we had a concept for how to structure the data so that (intellectual Property) contamination is eliminated.

Merck KGaA didn’t disclose the financial details of its joint venture with Palantir.
