EU seeks to deter economic coercion with new trade defence -Breaking

BRUSSELS (Reuters), The European Commission has announced on Wednesday plans to retaliate against EU members who place economic pressure on them. It stressed that the primary goal was deterrent.

This proposal was made to stop the increased flow of geopolitical tensions onto trade. The European Union’s member countries have charged the Trump administration with weaponizing trade.

“At a moment of growing geopolitical tensions trade is becoming more weaponized and the EU as its member countries

Being targeted by economic intimidation. In a statement, Valdis Dombrovskis (European Commissioner for Trade) stated that we need the tools necessary to react.

“With this proposal, we are sending out a clear message to the EU that it will defend its interests.

After receiving a complaint the Commission would have to decide whether an economic measure taken by a third party was intended to pressure the EU or one its members into changing their policies.
