KYIV, Reuters – Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated to Reuters Wednesday that talks between U.S. President Joe Biden (Russian President Vladimir Putin) had allowed for “deterrence & de-escalation”.

Kuleba, a top Ukrainian official who received the initial reaction to Tuesday’s video conference between Biden and Putin welcomed the U.S. attempts to bring Russia back to the negotiation table.

He said that Moscow should be able to deter any military expansion.

Kuleba stated in writing that the contact serves “as deterrence” and “de-escalation.” “We are grateful for the U.S. diplomatic engagement to help Russia return to the negotiation table.”

Biden told Putin Tuesday that Russia would be subject to “strong economic” and other sanctions if it launched an offensive against Ukraine. Putin demanded that NATO not be expanded further eastward.
