SACRAMENTO. Calif. (Reuters). California needs to be ready for an influx women looking for abortions in California if the U.S Supreme Court removes the constitutional right. This was the conclusion of dozens of rights and women’s groups, according to a report published Wednesday.

Future of Abortion Council’s report aims to position California as a place for women of conservative states who can have abortions. The Supreme Court is considering whether to overturn or weaken the 1973 Roe V. Wade ruling, which made abortion legal across the country.

Last week, the conservative-dominated court signaled a willingness to dramatically curtail abortion rights in America and possibly overturn Roe during oral arguments for a Mississippi case.

Toni Atkins, Democrat pro tem, stated that California should lead the way and fulfill its proclamation to be a Reproductive Freedom State.’ She also said she was ready to help anyone seeking abortion services.

More than 40 recommendations were made by the council, which included a request for funding programs that would allow additional providers to be trained and legal protections to women in states where it is illegal to perform abortions.

The Guttmacher Institute which researches abortion rights, reports that 26 states will ban or be likely to ban abortions in the event Roe is overruled or reduced by the court.

The council was formed by more than 40 doctors, women’s groups, and Democratic politicians. It was established in September following the Supreme Court refusing to stop a Texas law which effectively banned abortion after six weeks. Also allows for people to sue physicians or other individuals who assisted a woman to terminate a pregnancy when fetal cardiac activity is detected.

According to The Guttmacher Institute, 1.4 Million women could drive into California to have abortion services. This is if the access to this procedure in neighboring states is severely restricted or outlawed. This estimate does not include any women who may fly to California for abortions.

According to Brandon Richards (a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood), Planned Parenthood clinics began seeing Texans every day when the Texas law went into effect.

Richards explained that Richards noticed an immediate change in California’s health care centers.
