SAIC Mobility and Momenta to start public trials of robotaxi service in Shanghai -Breaking

BEIJING, (Reuters) – Momenta and SAIC Mobility, a subsidiary of the top Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, have started offering test drives for autonomous robotaxis to the public in a Shanghai area as part of a trial. Momenta announced Wednesday.

Momenta’s technology was used in the trial to test 20 robotaxi vehicles in Shanghai’s Jiading area.

SAIC Mobility, an SAIC Motor unit dedicated for robotaxi services was unavailable immediately.

Momenta, a Beijing company said that the companies will be testing autonomous “Level 4” driving technology for urban transport.

According to the statement, riders can summon a roboticaxi using the SAIC Mobility App by clicking one button.

Momenta Mobility and SAIC Mobility will increase the fleet of test vehicles in Jiading by 20 vehicles next year and expand the number of trial rides to Suzhou, China with 20 additional vehicles.

Technology firms and automakers are spending billions in autonomous driving to be ahead of what many believe will become the future mobility.

Chinese tech company Baidu Inc (NASDAQ 🙂 and Pony.ai, a self-driving startup won approval last month to start paid driverless robotaxi service in Beijing’s capital China.
