(Reuters] – AstraZeneca (NASDAQ) announced Wednesday that it has approved AstraZeneca’s antigen cocktail for COVID-19 prevention in those with weak immune systems, or who have suffered from severe side effects of coronavirus vaccines.

Many vaccines depend on the immune system’s ability to produce targeted antibodies and fight infection. However, AstraZeneca’s Evusheld therapy contains laboratory-made antibodies that can linger for several months in the body to stop the virus from spreading.

“Vaccines have been shown to be the best defense against COVID-19,” said Patrizia Cazzoni, Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

The FDA stated that Evusheld does not replace COVID-19 vaccine in pre-exposure prevention.
