MILAN, (Reuters) – Italian prosecutors have asked for Eni’s and Eni’s heads to be dismissed after a thorough investigation. They are addressing allegations of obstruction of justice in Nigerian or Algerian corruption cases.

Claudio Descalzi was the Eni chief executive and had been under investigation by prosecutors. His name was not listed in the final document. However, sources from the judiciary stated that the case would be dismissed because no evidence had been discovered.

The lawyers representing the individuals under investigation could not be reached immediately for comment.

Eni and CEO Descalzi both declined to comment.

It is alleged that Eni top managers conspired to discredit witnesses during corruption trials in Nigerian and Algeria between 2014-2019. Since then, the Nigerian defendants in two corruption cases have been exonerated.

It was ordered by the justice ministry of Italy in June to investigate the conduct and misconduct of the two Nigerian graft prosecution prosecutors.

The document is seen by Reuters. It accuses five Eni managers, as well a lawyer, of conspiring to obstruct justice and slander witnesses.

In Italy, the conclusion of an investigation is often the last step to requesting a trial.

OIL CARGO SUSPECTATION

In the document, it was also stated that Eni had been defrauded by three oil-trading companies. The case revolved around a shipment of “uncertain origin”.

Sources had previously revealed to Reuters that the crude oil, purportedly coming from Iraq, caused panic among Eni because of fears that it may be Iranian.

If Iran were to handle its oil, it would be in violation of the United States sanctions they have reimposed and extended since ending a nuclear deal with Iran.
