His manager announced Friday that Michael Nesmith, the Monkees guitarist and singer, had died. The band was hugely popular in the 1960s.

Michael Nesmith has passed away with great sadness. Over the past 30 years we shared many trips and projects, culminating in an Andrew Sandoval Monkees Farewell Tour that concluded just a few weeks back. said on Twitter.

Popularity of the Monkees increased after the group, which consisted of four members, was featured in a TV series about rock and roll.

Some of the band’s biggest hits were “Daydream Believer”, and “Vallerie”.

The group split in 1971. After Davy Jones’ death, three of the remaining band members reunited.

Nesmith was not a member of that group, even though others had been on reunion tours.

Nesmith stated back in the reunion that he had never left. It’s a part in me that I remember from my youth and it is part of what drives my artistic work. It will always be a part of my life. It fades away in relation to current activities, just like other things from the past. It can be stimulating, fun and inspiring to get together with friends or acquaintances. They did some great work together, and I’m always looking for the right spot and time to play again and reconnect with them.”
