WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The man from California was accused of assaulting the police at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. He also used a steel barricade for a battering ram.

Evan Neumann (49), was charged with 14 counts related to the Capitol Siege by Trump supporters. These charges were added on top of those originally filed in March.

According to prosecutors, Neumann was captured in camera wearing a gas mask, standing next to police at the base of the Capitol Building’s West Front.

According to the documents, Neumann removed his gas mask later and shouted at police “I’m willing die,” according to the records. He then assaults several police officers before running into them, using the barricade to batter them.

Neumann has not yet made a court appearance in the matter. He fled the United States on February 16th and is “currently believed to be” in Belarus, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in a statement.

The Daily Beast published a report that Neumann featured in an episode of “Goodbye, America” on Belarusian state TV. It recounted Neumann’s journey from the Soviet Republic to Minsk.

The Daily Beast reported that he said on the show that he wanted to seek political asylum in Belarus for the simple reason that the United States was no longer considered a country of law enforcement and security.

Neumann was among more than 220 persons charged with assaulting and preventing law enforcement during Jan. 6’s attack on Capitol. The incident disrupted a session of Congress that was supposed to formally certify Trump’s win in November 2020.

Neumann is thought to be the sole international fugitive in the case of the Capitol riot.

Following a rally at the White House that morning, Trump exhorted his supporters to march onto the Capitol. He also gave a speech where he falsely claimed that the election had been stolen through widespread voter fraud.

The riot left four people dead and one Capitol officer who was injured while protecting Congress died on the following day. Over 100 police officers were hurt in the melee that lasted for several hours. Four of these officers later took their lives.
