REUTERS/Jose CabezasMEXICO CITY (Reuters – Guatemala urged America Friday to increase investment in Central America. The country was also urging the United States to crack down on people-smuggling gangs, after dozens of migrants were killed in a Mexico truck accident.
Mexico and Guatemala officials pledged to combat international people-smuggling networks that they claimed were responsible for Thursday’s death of 55 migrants, mostly from Guatemala.
Marcelo Ebrard from Mexico was the Mexican foreign minister. He said that an “action group” regional had been established to counter human-smuggling network and was supported by Ecuador and Guatemala as well Mexico, Nicaragua, Nicaragua, and Nicaragua.
Ebrard stated that the group would “investigate and identify, learn, then bring to justice” the people responsible for the human tragedy.
Pedro Brolo, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister, spoke alongside Ebrard and called on Washington to invest in alleviating poverty in the region. He also called for harsher punishments against those who profit from illegal immigration.
He said, “We ask the U.S. to support development, investment, and prevention of these tragedies in the future,”
Brolo proposed also that governments from Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States meet soon in order to harmonize and standardize their policies on migration.
Numerous Central American migrants cross Mexico each month to escape poverty and violence. In dangerous situations, they often squeeze in large trucks that have been organized by smugglers.
