BERLIN (Reuters). German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Warsaw Sunday to discuss the Belarus migrant crises, Poland’s judicial independence and Russia’s military buildup in Ukraine. Also, a Russian gas pipeline from Germany will be discussed.

Scholz mentioned his intention to protect the long-standing good relations between Germany and Poland, but the leaders of the two countries have also been very clear on what they want from one another.

Mateusz Morawiecki is the Polish Prime Minister. He stated that he would encourage Scholz to stop Nord Stream 2 from being built to deliver Russian gas to Germany. It bypasses Ukraine.

Germany, however, has stood by Poland in its efforts to stem the flow of immigrants from Belarus. This crisis has been blamed on Minsk. It said it would support Warsaw and Brussels as they seek a solution.

The judicial system in Poland is, however, still an issue.

German broadcaster ARD reported Scholz saying that “there are issues we are discussing together in Europe”, and that these issues are being assessed differently.

POLAND IS FINED

After finding that Poland’s judicial reforms were in violation of EU law, the European Court of Justice imposed fines against Poland.

Poland refused to pay the penalty and its highest court ruled that Polish law could prevail over EU laws.

Germany’s new government, sworn-in Wednesday morning, has not publicly committed to stopping the Nord Stream 2 pipe if Russia invades Ukraine. This is contrary to the demands of the United States and Poland.

Russia is building troops along its Ukrainian border, raising fears about an invasion. U.S. President Joe Biden warned Vladimir Putin on Tuesday that Nord Stream 2 may be disrupted, and harsh economic sanctions would be in place if the troops invade.

A senior congressional aide stated Tuesday that U.S. officials had told Congress members they are in agreement with Germany regarding shutting down Nord Stream 2 if Russia invades Ukraine.

While German officials are yet to confirm the reports, Scholz indicated Wednesday that Russia would have consequences for breaching Ukraine’s frontier. The line was also confirmed Sunday by Group of Seven richest democracies.
