Russia says lack of NATO security guarantees would lead to confrontation

MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Russia’s Deputy Foreign Ministry Sergei Ryabkov appeared to be threatening confrontation if NATO and the United States fail to offer Russia security guarantees for its Eastern expansion. The warning was made Monday by the RIA news agency.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia has asked for legally binding security assurances that NATO won’t expand eastward or put its weapons near Russian territory. Washington consistently stated that Ukraine can have no veto on NATO plans.
