WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Monday, the U.S. Air Force said that 27 active-duty soldiers were dismissed for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

In August, the Pentagon mandated the vaccination for all military personnel. The vast majority of active duty troops received the required dose.

Ann Stefanek spokeswoman for Air Force. She said that troops had been given the opportunity to justify why they refused to be vaccinated but were not given any exemptions.

The virus is currently being vaccinated in 97% of Air Force personnel, which is a far greater number than that found in the U.S. general population. About 326,000 personnel are currently serving in the Air and Space Force.

The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 79 military personnel from all branches.

A Reuters tally shows that 800,000 Americans died from coronavirus complications on Sunday in the United States. This comes as the nation prepares for a surge of infections caused by more people spending time indoors and colder conditions.
