REUTERS/Al drago/File photoWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Mark Meadows was the Republican ex-President Donald Trump’s chief staff officer. He stated in an email that the U.S. National Guard would protect pro-Trump citizens. A report by a congressional committee issued Sunday said this.
A U.S. House of Representatives Committee investigating the fatal riot recommended in its report that Meadows is prosecuted because Meadows refused to cooperate fully with the inquiry. This issue will be up for vote by the House of Representatives on Monday.
Meadow’s email from Jan. 5, in which Meadow indicated that troops would be present at the National Guard was one of many issues the committee wanted to interview him on, the report stated.
Meadows, who has repeatedly been summoned for depositions by the Democratic-led Select Committee has refused to attend despite being asked. Although he provided some of the information that was requested by the panel’s committee, Meadows has not turned it over. He has kept many documents back, saying they were protected by executive privilege, which may have been because he worked for the president.
The committee stated that Mr Meadows’ inability to comply and the contempt recommendation were not based upon good-faith disagreements about privilege assertions.
“Rather, Mr Meadows failed to comply. He warrants contempt findings. Because he wholly refused any testimony to be presented to the courtroom,”
Meadows, a House member who was formerly a Trump associate, could be the third to be charged with criminal contempt. On the House’s instruction, the Justice Department has brought similar charges against Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon. Jeffrey Clark is another former Justice Department official being investigated by the House.
Meadows is suing Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, and the Select Committee. She claims that they violate legal protections of a senior adviser to President Trump and use excessively broad subpoenas.
Trump reiterated at Jan. 6 his unverbunten claim that his November 2020 loss to Democratic President Joe Biden was the result fraud and asked his supporters for a march on Washington.
