PfizerThe final Covid-19 drug antiviral analysis on Tuesday showed that it still had a near 90% rate of effectiveness in preventing deaths and hospitalizations in high-risk cases. Furthermore, recent laboratory data suggest that the drug remains effective against the rapid-spreading coronavirus variant omicron.

Based on interim results from approximately 1,200 individuals, U.S. drugmaker Dr. X said last month that the oral medicine is around 89% as effective at preventing death or hospitalizations than placebo. On Tuesday, additional 1000 people were added to the data.

There were 12 deaths in placebo-treated patients during the Pfizer trial, but none of the Pfizer participants died.

Pfizer tablets are combined with older antiviral Ritonavir for use every twelve hours, starting shortly after the onset of symptoms. This is done for five consecutive days. Paxlovid will sell the medication if approved.

Pfizer has also published early results from its second clinical trial, which showed that hospitalizations were reduced by approximately 70% in 600 patients at standard risk.

Mikael, chief scientist at Pfizer said that it was a “stunning outcome” in an interview.

Dolsten stated that he expected to receive authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory authorities soon for high-risk patients. According to Dolsten, he doesn’t believe that an FDA advisory committee meeting will be necessary.

Dolsten explained that the company is in advanced regulatory dialogues both with the UK and Europe. He also said the agency has dialogues worldwide with the majority of major regulatory agencies.

Currently, there are no approved oral antiviral treatment for Covid in the United States.

Rival MerckThe company applied for an emergency authorization to use its antiviral medication molnupiravir. However, the drug did not reduce hospitalizations or deaths by 30% in its clinical trial with high-risk patients.

Merck’s drug has been criticized by scientists for causing birth defects, and even mutating the virus.

The drug from Pfizer works in a different way. It belongs to a group of drugs called protease inhibitors, which are currently being used to treat HIV, Hepatitis C, or other viruses.

Dolsten stated that recent laboratory tests showed activity against the protease of the Omicron variant was as good as any SARS COV-2 variant.

According to the company, 180,000 of its treatment courses can be shipped this year. It also plans to make at least 80,000,000 more by 2022.

Dolsten stated that Pfizer plans to increase its production as the discovery of new variants like the omicron could make the demand for antivirals significantly higher. The effectiveness of current vaccines in fighting omicron infection seems to be lower.

Pfizer makes the Covid-19 vaccine and has a German partner. BioNTechvia a licensing arrangement with Medicines Patent Pool, an international group that deals in public health. Dolsten stated that the drug would be produced primarily by Pfizer for next year.
