Police investigate marine intoxication after Baltic Sea collision -Breaking

COPENHAGEN, (Reuters) – Two British crewmembers were found to have exceeded the legal limit of drugs and alcohol following a collision in the Baltic Sea with a Danish barge. The incident resulted in at least one death.

After colliding with the Scot Carrier, a 90-metre barge measuring 55 metres in length, the Karin Hoj crashed into the seabed off Bornholm. It was late Monday morning when fog and darkness engulfed the area.

Two Danish crewmembers were lost on the barge capsized. One was discovered dead inside the hull. Another crew member was still missing.

According to the Swedish Prosecution Authority, an initial investigation is underway for several possible crimes, such as gross negligence in maritime transport, negligence causing death, and intoxication.

According to it, a Briton as well as a Croatian were taken into custody. However, due to the preliminary nature the investigation, the company could not provide further details.

Scotline said that the Scot Carrier’s crew was tested according to the standard procedure (…) with only two of them exceeding the legal limit.

Company stated that it had a very strict policy regarding drugs and alcohol and would not tolerate any violation.
