SHANGHAI, (Reuters) – Food safety concerns were discovered at more than a dozen Starbucks outlets (NASDAQ:) in Suzhou in eastern China, regulators stated Tuesday. This comes a day after two outlets of the U.S.-based coffee company were criticised.

Suzhou’s market supervision bureau claimed on WeChat, that they have inspected 226 Starbucks locations in Suzhou. This was in response to a Beijing News article that stated two Starbucks shops in Wuxi used expired ingredients.

According to the bureau, it discovered issues in 18 Suzhou stores, which included “irregular sales” and purchase records. It also found trash bins and workers working without masks. They were ordered to immediately rectify the problem and added that all remaining 208 stores had met food safety regulations.

Starbucks apologized late Monday for violations in Wuxi and promised to conduct inspections of its more than 5,000 China stores. After the news, inspections were conducted at the Wuxi stores.

Starbucks spokesperson referred Reuters at its Monday statement when asked about Suzhou’s stores.

Chinese media and consumers have taken a more active role in protecting customers’ rights and monitoring big brand behaviour, particularly from abroad.

Starbucks is now the biggest market outside of the United States with 5,360 outlets in China, according to its latest earnings report.
