Truck driver sentenced to 110 years for fiery Colorado crash that killed 4 -Breaking

DENVER (Reuters), A Colorado judge sentenced a Texas truck driver Monday to 110 years imprisonment for vehicular homicide. His semi-trailer collided with stopped traffic, killing four drivers along a mountain-interstate.

Rogel Lazaro-Mederos (26), was found guilty by a Jefferson County jury of four murder charges and multiple counts each of reckless driving and assault stemming out of the fiery April 2019 crash.

Bruce Jones, Jefferson County District Judge, stated that Colorado law requires him to impose mandatory minimum sentences on all Aguilera Mederos counts. However, he said he did not want to send Aguilera Mederos to prison for ever.

Jones stated, “If it were up to me, it wouldn’t be mine sentence.”

The prosecution claimed that Aguilera Mederos, despite knowing his brakes were failing, drove through at least one abandoned truck ramp on the way down to Denver.

Then, he recklessly weaved between traffic, before his trailer that was transporting lumber crashed into traffic. He set off a fire alarm, and triggered a 28-vehicle collision. This led to the death of four and injury to six.

Aguilera Mederos stated that his brakes were failing and that he tried to steer clear of other cars.

Megan Harrison was the daughter of Doyle Harrison and one of those killed at Monday’s hearing. She told the judge that her father had taken her away.

She stated, “An important person in mine never came home,”

Aguilera Mederos wept when he spoke to the court. He begged for forgiveness from the families of the victims and asked for mercy.

He said, “I’m not a criminal.” “I’ve never had the desire to hurt anyone throughout my life.”
