(Reuters) – A former Minneapolis cop officer, White Derek Chauvin will plead guilty to violating George Floyd’s civil right during Black man’s assassination. This is a reverse of his September not-guilty plea.

According to the U.S. District Court, Saint Paul, Chauvin would plead guilty if he was allowed to change of his plea hearing Monday. Eric Nelson, Chauvin’s lawyer, didn’t respond to my request for comment.

The maximum punishment for the charges is either life imprisonment or death. It all depends on the facts of the case and any injuries. Prosecutors did not indicate any intention to seek the death penalty.

Chauvin was already sentenced to 22-1/2 Years in State Prison for Floyd’s 2020 Murder. A bystander recorded the incident on her cell phone.

He was convicted in April of charges including unintentional murder, third degree murder and manslaughter. This conviction is widely regarded as a major rebuke for the use of excessive police force against Black Americans.

Global outrage was sparked by the video showing Chauvin kneeling down on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes. It sparked one of America’s largest protest movements in recent decades.

Chauvin, J. Alexander Kueng, Tou Thao and Thomas Lane were arrested for Floyd’s use of a false $20 bill. In a March state trial, Kueng and Thao will be charged with aiding and abeting the murder of Floyd.

All four officers were indicted federally on May 5th for allegedly depriving Floyd his civil rights and failing to give him medical care.

Chauvin was also federally charged for Floyd’s rights to not be subject to unreasonable seizure or forceful use of force by police officers. Federal charges were filed against Thao and Kueng for violating Floyd’s right not to be subject to unreasonable seizure. They failed to intervene to stop Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck.

Chauvin has also pleaded no guilty to federal charges that he violated the civil rights a 14 year-old boy, which he was arrested for in 2017.
