MEXICO CITY, (Reuters) – A fresh wave of migrants has arrived at Mexico’s border south of the United States. This is after U.S. courts ordered that a policy that required migrants to remain in Mexico until their asylum claims are resolved was resumed.

Reuters received a statement from activists Tuesday confirming that there is a shortage of shelter spaces. They also said that “Remain in Mexico”, also known as the Migrant Protection Protocolss (MPP), was partly responsible for the hundreds of new immigrants.

Tomas Diosdado is the director of Alfa y Omega migrant shelter Mexicali. He said that “this is only the beginning”.

Diosdado claimed that some 750 Haitian migrants had arrived in Mexicali within the last couple of weeks due to the MPP restart. Illegal immigrants are often mistakenly believed to be allowed into the United States now, Diosdado said.

The latest effort by President Joe Biden’s Administration to repeal his controversial predecessor policy was rejected by a U.S. federal court on Monday.

Nearly one year into Biden’s presidential term, he campaigned with a promise to reverse many Trump’s harsh immigration policies.

According to activist, there have been hundreds of Haitian migrants arriving at Tijuana in Mexico, which is just south of San Diego.

U.S. officials returned first migrants to Ciudad Juarez last week under their resumed program. Tuesday’s data shows that 113 people had been sent, as per the United Nations International Organization for Migration.

Jose Garcia, who heads the Juventud 2000 shelter for migrants in Tijuana, stated that if the Mexican government doesn’t provide shelter, more people will be forced to flee.

He indicated that he plans to work with the Haitian government to establish a camp for migrants at the border.

The 2019 original program meant that around 70,000 immigrants seeking asylum had to wait for their U.S. court dates in Mexico, sometimes for years. They were not allowed to go to the United States to face their cases.

The U.S. government and the Mexican government have yet to clarify how long this latest version of the program will be in effect.
