TOKYO (Reuters – Japan’s government will establish a third party committee to examine the ensuing data scandal regarding construction orders and provide a report in a matter of a month, Tetsuo Seito, the Land Minister said Thursday.
Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, confirmed Wednesday a report from the Asahi newspaper stating that government officials had exaggerated the construction order value received by builders over the years. This is a serious blow to official statistics which are widely used by economists and investors.
Kishida was questioned by opposition lawmakers about the scandal. Some also questioned the credibility of the government’s economic strategy, since the data were used to compile Japan’s gross domestic product figures (GDP).
These concerns are not new. Another concern was expressed about the 2018 flaws in wage data from Health Ministry.
