WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The U.S. Senate voted to confirm President Joe Biden’s nomination of Nicholas Burns for the position of ambassador to China. It positions Burns, a veteran diplomat, to take a leading role in the increasingly fractious relationship between the global rivals.
The vote continued and the final count was 69-18 in favor Burns. Burns is a former U.S. Ambassador to NATO, who also served as Under Secretary of State between 2005-2008.
Biden selected Burns who had served both under Democratic and Republican administrations. It marked a change in the role of Ambassador to Beijing. This position was previously held by politicians but not experienced diplomats.
Burns was not yet certain when he would travel to China or if it would happen before the 2022 Winter Olympics at Beijing, February. On December 7, the White House declared that U.S. officials would not attend games because of China’s “atrocities” in human rights.
