VILNIUS/FRANKFURT – China has urged Continental to cease using parts from Lithuania. This comes amid a conflict between Beijing and the Baltic states over Taiwan’s status.
China cut diplomatic ties to Lithuania last month following the opening by Taiwan of a representative office in Vilnius. Last year, the ruling coalition in Lithuania agreed to support those who are fighting for freedom in Taiwan.
Continental Lithuania produces vehicle seat and door controllers, as well as other electronic parts. The company exports them to all over the globe, including China.
Continental refused to say whether China had asked it to terminate links with Lithuania.
China’s foreign ministry refuted the claim that Beijing pressured companies to not use parts made in Lithuania. However, the ministry criticised Lithuania’s stance towards Taiwan and stated that Chinese companies didn’t consider Lithuania to be a reliable partner.
