WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A U.S. Capitol rioter was sentenced by a federal judge to five years imprisonment on Friday for throwing a wood plank and a fire extinguisher into the hands of police in the attack on the Capitol’s seat on Jan. 6.

Robert Scott Palmer of Largo in Florida was sentenced by the Department of Justice for attacking law enforcement with dangerous weaponry during an assault that occurred as Vice President Mike Pence met with members of Congress to confirm President Joe Biden’s victory in 2020.

Palmer is first to be sentenced for the January 6 charge of resisting, assaulting or impeding police officers using dangerous or deadly weapons. The sentence was the longest in the ongoing investigation of January 6.

According to court records, Palmer, age 54, was among the protesters outside of Capitol. He threw a plank towards Washington officers and Capitol police while he was there. He then spray the contents of the fire extinguisher on the officers, and then throw it at them.

Palmer was taken into custody on March 17th. On Oct. 4, he pleaded guilty. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered Palmer to pay $2,000 restitution and required him to serve three years of supervision after he was released from prison.

In connection to the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters, more than 700 have been detained.
