(Reuters) – U.S. soccer’s female player of the year was Lindsey Horan, a midfielder. The announcement came from the U.S. soccer federation on Thursday.

Horan was versatile and scored six goals as well as five assists. He helped America win a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, and the SheBelieves Cup for the second time.

Vlatko andonovski, head coach of the national team said: “Her hard work in midfield is admirable as well as her determination to grow as a player.”

Her ability to set the pace of games at high levels and win ball in midfield is legendary, along with her ability to create goals from the attack.

Votes from fans, players and coaches of national teams were used to calculate the award.

“I’ve worked very hard to get to this point in my career, and while I know there’s so much more work to do and things to accomplish individually and as a team, it’s always very nice to be recognized,” said Horan, who helped Portland clinch the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) shield this year.

Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit forward) was named the NWSL rookie player of the year.
