GENEVA (Reuters), – Friday’s United Nations statement expressed concern at the reintroduction of a Trump policy which forced thousands of migrants to wait for their U.S. asylum case resolution in Mexico.

The United States appeals court on Monday denied a new attempt by Biden’s administration to terminate the policy, also known as “Remain In Mexico”, or officially the Migrant Protection Protocols.

After taking office in January of this year, Joe Biden was a Democrat and scrapped the Republican policies. After Missouri and Texas filed lawsuits over the rescission of his Republican predecessor’s policy, a federal judge decided it needed to be restored.

Ravina Shamdasani from UN Human Rights Office stated that they were concerned about the Migrant Protection Protocol being re-implemented and the impact it would have on Mexico’s humanitarian capacity to host migrants.

We are worried that any heightened security measures to manage migration will drive more migrants to unsafe routes. Furthermore, we fear that there will be an increase in the use of dangerous routes or smuggling routes.

The 2019 policy requires that asylum seekers must wait in Mexico for weeks, sometimes even years to receive a U.S. court case date. They cannot then be allowed to attend their hearings in America. Biden decried this policy while on his campaign trail. Immigration advocates claimed that migrants trapped in unsafe border cities face kidnappings, and other dangers.

Nancy Izzo Jackson, Senior Bureau Officer for the U.S. Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, stated to reporters that they are working to improve the policy, as well as appeal the decision to the courts.

Republicans are expressing concern at the record number of immigrants caught crossing to Mexico from the United States.

But many of those arrested at the borders are expelled immediately without the possibility to seek asylum.
