CHICAGO (Reuters), – Seaboard Foods, second-largest pork producer in the country, announced on Friday that it will restrict sales in California of some pork products due to a California law that forces farmers to allow more room for livestock raised to be sold within the state.

According to David Eaheart, a spokesperson for the company that produces 7.2 million hogs per year, certain Whole Pork Products will no longer be sold into California because of California’s Proposition 12.

It will take effect on January 1, 2019, after the measure, which was approved by voters back in November 2018.

It is believed to make food production easier by limiting the space required for calves that are raised as veal or egg-laying chickens. The ban also prohibits raw veal, pork and eggs from animals that are too small to be sold.

Oponents of U.S. beef industry argument that enforcers will cause food price increases and harm to consumers and producers, as well as violate the Commerce Clause under the U.S. Constitution. This clause requires producers outside of states to either comply or face the sales ban.

The National Pork Producers Council estimates that California is home to 15% of the U.S. market for pork. According to the council, conversion of barns in order to comply with Proposition 12 standards would be costly for pork producers.

Hormel Foods Corp (NYSE: ) stated it is working to comply fully with the law.
