PARIS, (Reuters) – France will allow citizens to legally take the name of their mother once they reach adulthood, Eric Dupond-Moretti, Minister for Justice said Sunday.

The government supports a Bill by Patrick Vignal, a ruling LREM Party lawmaker. It allows children to change their name easily at the local townhall when they reach 18 years old.

French citizens are free to choose whether they want to preserve their father’s or mother’s names, and can take either one in any order.

French citizens are already able to change their family names, however it can be difficult and time-consuming. They must show the justice ministry that they have a valid reason to do so.

Dupond Moretti posted the following tweet (NYSE:): “Nobody should need to divulge their intimate reasons to change their name to state,”

In the coming weeks, the law will go to vote.

Dupond-Moretti stated that the new legislation would make it simpler to modify the family names of those citizens who were raised by one mother or two parents or both.

Elle was told by Dupond-Moretti that it would be a law favoring equality between parents, and freedom for all French citizens.

According to him, the legislation will also provide a way for victims of trauma, such as incest and violence against their mother, to amend their family name.
