WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Alex Jones a conspiracy theorist who founded the right-wing website Infowars said Monday that he will invoke his Fifth Amendment right and decline to give evidence before the congressional committee probing Jan. 6 attacks on the U.S Capitol.

Jones notified the Select Committee of his intention to invoke the Fifth Amendment right to silence,” Jones’s attorneys stated in the lawsuit that Jones filed against the House of Representatives Select Committee of Jan. 6.

The Fifth Amendment to U.S. Constitution prevents a person being required to give information to investigators which could expose them to criminal charges.

Jones’s lawsuit states that the panel has set Jones up for an interview on Jan. 10, 2022.

An official of the Jan. 6-Select Committee did not respond to our request for comment.

Roger Stone, an ex-political adviser to Donald Trump, John Eastman, a Trump lawyer and Jeffrey Clark are just three of the high profile witnesses who have stated they intend to invoke this protection.

Jones filed the suit in District of Columbia federal court. He raised constitutional objections against subpoenas that the committee had issued last month to him for testimony and communications.

Trump also tried to prevent the committee’s access to his White House records beginning Jan. 6, and any preceding days. He claimed that they were protected under a legal doctrine known as executive privilege.

Trump’s appeals were rejected last week by an appellate court. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear his appeal.

Jones led the march of supporters to the Capitol, Jan. 6. However, Jones has not been charged.

Owen Shroyer (an InfoWars employee) was accompanied by Jones during the Jan. 6 riot.
