While the Lightning Network has been growing worldwide, it is still not the same as Latin America. It has been found that subcontinental users of the Lightning Network are much less active than their counterparts in other regions.

Around 38,800 Lightning Network Nodes have been surveyed globally so far. 17.136 are public IP nodes, which is according to ACINQ’s data. ACINQ was the French startup responsible for the implementation of Eclair and the Phoenix wallets. It is also one the biggest companies focused on scaling BTC.

Although the data collected by ACINQ Explorer may not be accurate as stated by the company on its website it offers a panorama of global reality that is close to the actual number of nodes operating on each continent.

According to Blockstream and University of Vienna specialists, most of the Bitcoin Lightning Network’s operational nodes are found in North America. This region has 44.8% of its total, while 43.1% of it is located in Europe.

Rest of the nodes can be found in Asia (6.2%) and Oceania (2.2%), with South America only 0.8% operating, just behind Africa (0.6%).

Brazil is leading the Start-Up of Lightning Latin America

The Lightning Network geolocation map shows that Brazil is the leader in South America, with 9 nodes (120 operating channels) and Mexico has 3 and 46 channels respectively. Colombia and Mexico have 2 and 46 channels each.

Venezuela has 3 nodes with 8 channels and is home to 8 of them, while Argentina operates with 7 nodes with 9 channels. Chile, on the other hand, has 4 nodes with 4 channels and Peru only one operating node, which offers 2 channels.

Spain is the country that has the highest number of Lightning nodes operating if all of Hispanoamerica are included. According to 1ml.com data, the European country has 29 nodes and 131 channels.

Flipside

• This seems paradoxal in an area where Bitcoin adoption has been booming for the last two years. However, active public nodes are not experiencing the same growth.
• This is because users are not aware of the potential benefits associated with operating Lightning Network nodes to earn passive income.
