(Reuters) – Tuesday saw the second day in deliberations by the jury of Kimberly Potter’s manslaughter trial. Potter was a former Minnesota police officer that mistook her Taser for a handgun, and she fatally shot Daunte Wayne during a traffic stop.

The twelve-member jury began work on Monday at 9 AM local time (11 AM EST). It had just completed five hours worth of deliberations that followed close arguments.

Prosecutors stated Potter did so recklessly, with “culpable negligence”, in drawing the wrong gun. Defense argued Wright committed his own death resisting arrest and fleeing, and that Potter used force when necessary.

Potter, 49 years old, has pleaded no guilty to charges of first- and 2nd-degree manslaughter, with maximum penalties of 10 and 15 years, respectively. Potter claimed she mistakenly thought that she was drawing her Taser. Wright was killed by her 9 mm gun on April 11.

Potter is white. Wright’s shooting sparked protests in Brooklyn Center.

It happened just miles from where Derek Chauvin (a former Minneapolis police officer) was also on trial for George Floyd. George Floyd is a Black man who died in 2020 after an arrest that set off protests against racial injustice in many U.S. towns. Chauvin was found guilty of murder.
