KHARTOUM, (Reuters) –Sudan Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok informed a number of intellectual and political figures in his country that he plans to resign within the next hour. Two sources close to Hamdok spoke to Reuters Tuesday.

After a coup that took place a month before, Hamdok was re-elected on November 21. This followed a period of transitional partnerships with political parties and military power.

Sources say that the agreement had been drafted by several political groups. But, they claim it was widely criticised by parties and the public.

On Saturday hundreds of thousands protested at the presidential palace against Hamdok’s decision to withdraw from military rule.

47 people were killed in protests against the military regime, two of them as a result Saturday’s demonstration. According to the United Nations, 13 female and male victims of gang or sexual rape were reported on Tuesday.

Hamdok was previously said by sources close to him that he wouldn’t be able to remain in power unless he has political support, and if the agreement was implemented. The military was asked to free political prisoners, to protect freedom of speech and to allow Hamdok the independence to appoint new cabinets.

Hamdok, in a statement made over the weekend said that Sudan was moving toward “the abyss”, blaming intransigence political and lack of consensus for a new agreement.

Hamdok’s group called Tuesday on him to remain in the same position, but he refused to leave. Sources said that Hamdok had spoken to them on Tuesday.
