(Reuters] – Joan Didion has passed away at the age 87. She was best known for her essays, screenplays and memoirs that chronicled the modern world and her sorrow over her children’s deaths. The New York Times reported Thursday.

The cause of death was Parkinson’s disease, the newspaper said, citing an email by Didion’s publisher.
