NFT forgeries aren’t going away any time soon

Lois van Baarle, a digital artist, tweeted last week that “132 instances” had been found of her art being used as NFTs by OpenSea. This was all without her permission.

She noted that NFTs can verify the authenticity of photos, but they do not guarantee the original authorship.

Van Baarle, who goes by the online nickname “Loish,” creates highly stylized comical characters and paintings. Numerous NFTs that were used to create these designs were removed from OpenSea last week, as a result of the twitters.

OpenSea, and similar NFT platforms aren’t the only place where artists can sell their work. Shepard Fairey (the artist behind Obama’s Hope campaign poster) has voiced disapproval at the way his work was reproduced on NFT platforms like Rarible.

Van Baarle points to the fact that moderation on OpenSea is an important problem – it’s possible to find a lot of very vile, prejudiced NFTs within two seconds. But the real problem lies in the NFT market’s fundamental dynamics.

An NFT does not contain any information. It is a symbol linking to a file of digital media. The smart contract’s logic does not allow for verification of whether the image, music, and video associated with it are legitimate.
